Technology for Development Specialist

The Opportunity

We reached approximately two million populations and invests over 40 million US dollars annually to reach more children than ever before, through programs in Health, Nutrition, Education, Protection and Child Rights and Governance, Livelihood, HIV and AIDS, and Humanitarian crises.

The Technology for Development (T4D) Specialist is responsible for quality design and integration of T4D projects, products and services to advance the goals of Save the Children in Nepal. S/he will work closely with colleagues across Save the Children Nepal office as well as the Asia Regional Office and the Centre including thematic/cross thematic experts, new business development staff and T4D counterparts and others to ensure that our existing and upcoming projects adequately and appropriately incorporate technology solutions. S/he will contribute to partnership and new business initiatives that help develop and advance T4D in SC’s projects, program and strategies. S/he will be the lead technical expert for the development and implementation of digital products and services within projects/programs and will be proactively pursuing and securing opportunities to build SC’s and partners’ capacity on T4D and to communicate externally about Save the Children’s T4D work to position ourselves better with the government, donors and other peer agencies.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Advise sectoral technical experts on the use of T4D strategies, tools and techniques to make their projects more efficient, scalable or effective; work closely with thematic leads and understand thematic priorities to be able to advise the best possible technology solutions to the problems our projects aim to address
  • Identification of technological solutions to be used in programming and incorporate them in new and/or existing project designs, maximise the effective use of technology in programming, support proposal teams in the integration of technology and innovation program components; ensure that T4D is adequately budgeted for in new proposals
  • Continuously monitor on-going T4D initiatives within and outside SCI and champion the use of the standard processes/best practices in implementing T4D solutions; adapt the type of technological solutions based on, among other things, new technological developments, communities’ knowledge and access to technology, etc
  • Establish and run a T4D working group and be the CO champion for T4D
  • Build the capacity of SC and partner staff on the utilization of technology solutions
  • Be the CO innovation champion, explore new opportunity areas for expansion of SC programming through innovative approaches involving technology
  • Networking with technology partners
  • Contribute to efforts to message externally about SC’s capacity for technology and innovation and represent SC at fora focused on tech and innovation
  • Look for opportunities to showcase Save the Children’s work in T4D and our related skills in order to grow a recognized profile in the sector
  • Collaborate with the regional and global T4D focal points and other country office T4D advisors / specialists
  • Become conversant with the regional and global preferred digital programming tools and systems in order to support their use in local project and programs

Other Duties

  • Other tasks as requested by the Director, Program Development and Quality
  • Support the Save the Children Humanitarian responses where appropriate, ensuring timely and quality responses in line with international standards and technical best practice

Qualifications and Experience

Academic Qualification

  • Master’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, International Development or any other ICT related field

Working Experience

  • 7 years of demonstrated experience in any area of expertise, of which at least 5 years directly relevant work experience in ICT4D or similar technology and innovative strategy and implementation role at an international NGO or similar organisations
  • Track record of ICT strategy and product roadmap development
  • Track record of ICT product management, including design and implementation, driving toward creation of successful ICT solutions in developing country context
  • Experience working with users and other stakeholders in technology projects to translate their needs and goals for the technology use into clear, actionable technical requirements for system design, selection and implementation
  • Proven project management ability to manage multiple complex tasks, programs or projects
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail: ability to juggle large amounts of details while maintaining big picture
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills in English and Nepali and experience making presentations to internal and external audiences
  • Proven ability to work independently and also collaboratively, as part of multi-cultural teams
  • Availability to work early or late to accommodate calls with teams in other regions and time zones
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex issues through critical thinking, analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including communicating with impact, influencing, negotiation, and coaching.
  • A high degree of flexibility and adaptability in order to respond to changing needs.
  • Ability and willingness to change work practices and hours in the event of major emergencies including travelling at short notice and for extended periods of time.

Desirable

  • INGO experience and an excellent grasp of operational issues.
  • Ability to understand and manage structured query language (SQL), knowledge of ‘relational database management system (RDBMS), ‘object oriented database management systems’ (OODBMS) and/or XML database management systems; experience with database-driven web applications and development of mobile applications

A detailed understanding of programs/program implementation in various contexts and ways of working of an organisation like Save the Children.Required No.(s): 1(Nepali Citizens only)

Location: Based in Country Office, Kathmandu
