Miss Elizabeth Hawley Memorial Journalism Scholarship
The Himalayan Trust calls for applications for The Elizabeth Hawley Memorial Scholarship for Female Nepali Journalists, 2020.
Miss Hawley, born in Chicago in 1923 came to Nepal in 1959 and never left. She first served as a reporter for Reuters and other international news organizations, and then went on to be the Country Director for Sir Edmund Hillary's Himalayan Trust, was the New Zealand Honorary Consul to Nepal, and the keeper of the Himalayan Database.
Miss Hawley passed away on January 2018 at the age of 94. In her honor, the American Himalayan Foundation, a partner of The Himalayan Trust, established the Elizabeth Hawley Memorial Journalism Scholarship In 2019 comprising a two-year Masters degree at Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu. The scholarship is aimed at addressing the gender imbalance among journalists and improving the standard of journalism in Nepal by allowing journalists to further develop their expertise in their chosen area of journalistic interest.
The scholarship will be open to all women of Nepali citizenship, resident in Nepal with a Bachelors degree and an existing body of journalistic work. The scholarship is competitive, with one offer each year for a two-year course. The scholarship covers the university cost of the Master's degree program and the purchase of a laptop.
Requirements: The applicants must:
- be a Nepali national, resident in Nepal.
- satisfy the admission criteria of Tribhuvan University and the affiliated college in which the nominated master's degree course is conducted (the scholarship is valid only for TU and its affiliated colleges).
- hold a Bachelors in Journalism (BA MCJ or similar).
- have an existing body of journalistic work which the selection committee can evaluate.
Applications can be in Nepali or English and are to Include:
- An application letter stating the chosen master's degree course, the reasons the applicant chose this particular course, and justification to be considered for the scholarship.
- An updated CV with copies of college and university transcripts and supporting documentation.
- Copies of, or links to, the applicant's published news articles or news media.

Only short-listed candidates with full documentation will be called for an interview. The selection committee's decision is final.
