Both of them become excited and curious about Mohini avatar of lord Vishnu. So they along with other God went to Baikunth ( place where lord Vishnu lives) and requested lord Vishnu to grace them by making appearance of his Mohini avatar. After request from everybody, Lord Vishnu agreed to grace. So he did but when he take Mohini avatar Lord Shiva just felt in love with her and became intimate. Lord Shiva who is known as among few God who has win over concupiscence became fond of Mohini avatar of lord Vishnu. Everything happen with God will. So what made lord Shiva and lord Vishnu let such thing happen. As we know most of the time such freak are for the death of demon who almost become immortal by worshiping god and getting boon from them. Reasons of this is not different. So let me tell you what actually happend.

We all know how difficult it was to kill Mahisasur for god. After death of Mahisasur by godeesss Aadi-shakati, his wife Mahisi seek revenge. She decided to avenge her husband's death and so she started praying to lord Brahama. This difficult prayig made her almost invincible. She started worshiping lord Brahma. After praying for years and years she was able to impress lord Brahma. Finally Lord Brahama make his appearance to her and requested her to ask for her boon. Mahisi asked for boon of being immortal. But lord Brahama told her that it  was not possible so ask some other boon. After refusal of Lord Brahma, Mahisi was disappointed but to make herself almost immortal she asked that her death would be possible only by the son of lord Shiva and lord Vishnu.

She thought as both of them are  male, birth of son from them would not be possible. But as the cruelty of Mahisi was on its height, lord Shiva and lord Vishnu decided to go for this. So friends this is the story behind it.
